APNM COMPOSER: Ursula Mamlok

Ursula Mamlok was born in Berlin in 1923. She came to New York in 1941. Among her teachers were George Szell, Vittorio Giannini,
Roger Sessions, Stefan Wolpe, and Ralph Shapey. Mamlok’s music is a synthesis of many stylistic elements. She adopted the serial
method in the early 1960s. Her early neo-classical training under-girds her compositional technique, while her gestural vocabulary
reflects her studies with Wolpe and Shapey. Mamlok has written more than sixty works, which include pieces for both small and large
ensembles, vocal music, and three major works for orchestra: C.F. Peters, McGinnis and Marx, Casia, and Furore publish her music.
Ursula Mamlok taught at NYU, CUNY, Temple University, and the Manhattan School of Music, where she is now Professor Emerita.

The three-movement String Quartet No. 1, completed in 1963, is turbulent, virtuosic, rhythmically fluid music, with radically indepen-
dent part writing.

Mamlok's Oboe Concerto was composed in 1974-76 And revised in 2003. It is a three-movement work, played without pause.
The solo writing is marked by the use of extended techniques, while the percussion writing distills her extensive experience as a
percussion composer.
